children. They had the carpets cleaned twice a year and Protectant
applied..  Now they were moving into a brand new custom home!
So when I got the call to come clean their one year old carpet, I was anxious
to see their new home.  My anticipation soon turned to anxiety.  The carpet
showed major traffic patterns, and looked like a steam roller had been
parked in the family room!
I tried not to show my surprise when I asked Tessa about the condition.
Tessa said that she was hoping that I could make it look new again and do
whatever I did to their other carpet to make it stay looking new.
I told Tessa that I would do everything I could to restore the carpeting – and
I got to work.

Now we needed to look elsewhere to solve this mystery. I took a fiber and
conducted a “Test” to determine what it was made of. As I suspected, it was
Olefin.  (Olefin carpet is best used for indoor/outdoor use.  It is naturally
stain resistant because it is constructed of Polypropylene but it will crush
unless it is a super low pile.)
I asked her where they purchased the carpet, who was the salesman, what
was the cost per yard, what type of padding did they purchase, and what
type of warranty did the carpet come with?  She went and got the invoice.
The invoice was able to shed light on some of the answers. They
purchased the carpet from a warehouse that offered free installation and
free padding.  (remember, nothing is ever really free).
Tessa told me that they ordered the carpet from a book and it took about 3
weeks before it came in. They sent two installers out.  They smelled like
lunch was beer. A Lot Of It.  And they cut the carpet on the driveway.
The driveway had just been paved and she was sure that she could smell
asphalt in the house for weeks!  She felt uncomfortable around the
installers so she left.  When she came back after they finished., she saw
they left a mess – they didn’t vacuum up the cut fibers and they stuffed
some scraps in the heating vents.
Paul and Tessa thought that the carpet they ordered was thicker, but when
they mentioned it to the salesman he just told them that carpet always looks
flatter when it is first laid because it has been on a roll and would return to
the carpet they expected in a few days. That never happened.

By this time Paul came home and showed me the areas just inside all of the
rooms and the hallway. In the past year, the padding crushed down in those
traffic areas, and it showed! Paul told me that he distinctly remembered the
salesman showing them the padding that was free and why they didn't want
it.  He purchased the upgrade.
The invoice didn’t give all the information that I was looking for.  I wanted to
know what the weight of the carpet was and the type of padding that was
installed. That information was missing from the invoice, plus they were
never given any warranty information.
I asked them if the installers had any leftovers, both of the carpet and the
padding. No – they took everything.  (More questions came to my mind)
To solve this mystery we were going to have to go over to the carpet
warehouse for more information. And to know what padding was actually
installed we needed to lift a corner of the carpet, and remove a sample.
(This could be easily put back later.)
Paul and I walked into the warehouse and asked for the salesman – turns
out he hasn’t worked at the store in about one year, in fact, the store was
sold about that time but the new manager would be happy to help.
I told him how I had been caring for the carpet in their home for years, and
how it still looked great after 14 years, but the new carpet was not holding
up after just one year.
The manager went to the files and looked up the information on the sale. It
turns out the carpet that was ordered, was a low grade, olefin carpet.  The
padding paid for was upgraded to a Frothed Foam – sturdy enough to
stand up to one years traffic.
Then I pulled out the padding sample and showed the manager that the
padding installed in my customers home was Foam Padding – not the
upgrade.
The manager recognized that the padding had been “switched” to a
cheaper padding, and that the low grade Olefin carpet was not the correct
carpet choice for this family. He left to call the owner.
Tessa turned to Paul and said, “Why didn’t we think to ask our carpet
cleaner when we were making our carpet choice?  He would know, better
than any salesman, what would hold up for us.” Turning to me, Tessa
asked, “What would you recommend for our family?”
I took them over to the side of the store that carried the nylon carpet
samples and showed them a variety of styles that would last a long time. In
fact they would get tired of it before it wore out. I showed them the different
carpet densities, twists, pile heights and weights.
We were about to discuss color when the manager came back. He told
Tessa and Paul that they did not have any idea who made the padding
switch – installer or salesman, and that they couldn’t do anything about the
previous owner.  Because of wanting to create a good customer, the store
would supply the correct padding if they paid for the installation. That was
probably a pretty safe offer on the part of the store, because the cost of
lifting and reinstalling the carpet would have caused most people to say,
“Forget it”.  But, Tessa and Paul decided they couldn’t live with the low
quality carpet and decided to replace the carpet with one that would suit the
family’s needs.  With my advice, they made a choice of a carpet that will last
them a long, long time.

Let’s face it.  The carpet salesman’s job is to sell carpet.  There interest
stops at the point of installation.  You will live with the carpet for years and it’
s our job to help you make last for a long time.  We have the experience
and knowledge to help you.  Call our office first for advice!
